Why Creativity Is the Greatest Reset We Have (and How to Bring More of It Into Your Life This Season)

There’s a particular kind of joy that arrives when we allow ourselves to be little again—when we step away from the outcome, soften the expectations, and rediscover the freedom of color, line, and play. I watch this every day in my studio in Brookline: adults who haven’t touched a brush in years suddenly exhale; kids who thought they “weren’t good at art” find themselves glowing; teens drop their guard and let intuition lead.
As someone who teaches hundreds of students each year, I’ve come to see that creativity isn’t a luxury. It’s a nervous system reset. It’s where regulation, imagination, and learning meet.
Last week, at the Massachusetts Conference for Women, dozens of attendees experienced this firsthand at our Creative Reset Station—proof that even a few minutes of artmaking can bring calm and presence. A few days later, during Brookline First Light, Evelyn Berde’s luminous paintings pulled visitors into that same grounded quiet. Creativity continues to be the most powerful tool we have for reconnecting with ourselves.
So as the holiday season approaches, I find myself reflecting on how we can gift that sense of spaciousness—to ourselves, to our children, and even through the art we bring into our homes.
Below are a few meaningful ways to reconnect with your creative flow this month.
1. Explore the Best Art Classes in Brookline
If you’re searching for the best art classes in Brookline, our winter programs are now open—and they’re filling quickly. For adults, our Abstract Painting course remains one of our most beloved offerings. It’s perfect for anyone looking for “art workshops for adults near me” that combine technique, play, and emotional release. For kids, our new Art of Asia semester takes students on a journey through India, the Middle East, and Japan, culminating in a curated visit to the Harvard Art Museums. Spaces are limited, so registering early ensures the days and times that work best for your family.
2. Celebrate Young Artists at Our End-of-Semester Exhibit
On Sunday, December 14, from 4–6 PM, we’re hosting our annual Kids & Teens Winter Exhibit.
Expect:
Holiday card-making
Inspiring raffles
A gallery walk-through of our Ancient Egypt semester
Joyful connection with other families
This event is open to the community—if you’ve been curious about our kids’ programs, this is a wonderful way to immerse yourself.
3. Learn How to Choose Art for Your Home
A question I hear often—especially around the holidays—is:“How do I choose art for my home?”
Here’s my favorite rule of thumb:Choose pieces that make your nervous system sign. You will live with this work every day. It should ground you, expand you, or transport you.
Whether you’re drawn to:
vibrant abstracts
soothing landscapes
or intricate ink and watercolor works
…your home becomes a sanctuary when the art reflects your inner world. If you need guidance, our gallery offers complimentary consultations—we help many clients choose artwork that aligns with their values, their spaces, and their emotional needs.
4. Indulge in a New Wine + Watercolor Workshop (January 8)
Just in time for the holidays, we’re launching a brand-new partnership with the Boston Wine School.Join us on January 8, 6:30–8:30 PM for an evening of exquisite wines paired with a gentle, meditative watercolor practice.
If you’ve been looking for “art workshops for adults near me” that feel refreshing and elevated, this one is a beautiful entry point. It also makes a meaningful holiday gift.
5. Reset Your Year: Half-Day Creative Retreat (January 11)
Our next half-day retreat on Sunday, January 11 offers a rare chance to slow down, breathe, and return to yourself before the new year fully unfolds. These retreats combine artmaking, grounding practices, and gentle clarity work—and they tend to fill quickly.
